Epoch of Loss

2020

Found Photography, Archival Documents, Digital collage, Computer Algorithm

Epoch of Loss is a meditative exploration of recollection, memory, and meaning, focusing on the unintended consequences of digital nativism. Photographs, personal notes, and archival documents are uploaded and abandoned, serving as digital artifacts that may be found by anthropologists of tomorrow. Presented without context, these digital artifacts are combined (and corrupted) by the artist, assisted by artificial intelligence and data processing algorithms.

The Master Movie Poster

I designed this poser based on one of my favorite scenes from Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master. It is designed to be hung right side up or upside down. Mirroring Freddie Quell's search for meaning, he appears both rising and falling depending on the poster’s orientation. The poster is compositionally arranged using proportions derived from the Fibonacci spiral.

Art direction: Nylon Jacket

The erosion of memory and bittersweet nostalgia are the driving emotions behind Real / Emotional, the newest musical release from producer Nylon Jacket. I was hired to help design a visual identity and 12 companion pieces (one for each song planned for the release.)

Each animated gif was created by taking a source photograph, taken of or by the artist, and applying a custom pixel sorting algorithm to produce something familiar yet foreign and ethereal by nature. Images are seen through the window of a golden ratio rectangle, a nod to the shape of the digital screens from which we consume much of our content.

The images are designed to be viewed as still frames or animated gifs depending on the medium -- whether it is on an Instagram post, printed onto a tshirt, or on the sleeve of a record or CD.
